The most environmentally friendly packaging should protect our skincare products while also being considerate of the planet. One promising option is switching to materials such as paper and cardboard made from wood. At NIVEA, we are committed to conserving nature, so we use wood from responsible, certified sources. By choosing these materials, we aim to reduce plastic use and help protect forests from excessive deforestation.

Our goal is to create packaging solutions that fulfil their purpose while respecting and protecting the environment.

Of course not. At NIVEA, we are convinced that animal testing is not necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness or tolerability of our cosmetic products. With more than 40 years of experience, we are among the leading companies in developing and applying alternative test methods. In 1992, our skin research teams developed one of the world’s first officially recognised non-animal test methods. NIVEA’s goal is to end animal testing for cosmetic products worldwide. This is why we support various international working groups by sharing scientific knowledge, and encourage regulatory authorities in China and other regions to recognise and approve alternatives to animal testing.

At NIVEA, you will find a large selection of vegan skincare products that many consumers appreciate as a harmonious alternative reflecting their views on animal welfare. Our entire range consists of fully vegan skincare formulas containing no ingredients of animal origin. For us, vegan cosmetics means that our products are created without any animal-derived components. We care deeply that our products are skin-friendly while also considering the protection and wellbeing of animals. We take consumer concerns seriously and actively work to offer more environmentally and animal-friendly options. Currently, more than 350 NIVEA products are vegan (formulas without ingredients of animal origin), representing over 80% of the entire NIVEA portfolio.

Natural skincare products are not automatically biodegradable. Biodegradation is a natural process, but certain modern materials can disrupt it. At NIVEA, we place great importance on using biodegradable ingredients in our skincare formulas so they follow natural cycles without negative effects. We work to ensure that our products are not only effective but also more environmentally conscious. This includes steps such as ending the use of polyethylene exfoliating particles (microbeads) to support the biodegradability of our formulas. Since the end of 2015, all NIVEA exfoliants and, since 2020, all NIVEA products worldwide are 100% microplastic-free as per UNEP definition, such as shower gels and shampoos have been formulated without microplastic according to the UNEP definition. Alongside naturally derived ingredients such as plant oils, herbs and essential oils, we also use synthetic but biodegradable ingredients that remain environmentally considerate. Our biodegradable skincare aims to offer a safer and more sustainable alternative for people who are mindful of the environmental and personal impact of their skincare choices.

Sustainability is a key value at NIVEA. As a leading skincare brand with more than 100 years of experience, we align our actions with the principles of sustainable development. We develop products that help care for the skin gently and continue to work on reducing our environmental impact – for example by increasing the use of recycled materials in our packaging and seeking more environmentally compatible alternatives. We are also committed to ending animal testing worldwide and offer a wide range of vegan skincare products. In addition, we place strong emphasis on promoting biodegradable ingredients to help make our products more environmentally considerate.
